This was my first time back in class since week one because I had to miss class last week. It is easier to control my avatar now after having two weeks of experience under my belt. There was a Facebook group created last week so I only joined it this week as I wasn’t in class last week and didn’t know it was created. This will make it easier for everyone to contact each other if we’re having problems.
John talked about an elevator pitch that each person in the class needs to do, I had never heard of an elevator pitch before but John explained what it entails. It is approximately 30 seconds and you need to tell everyone about your chosen topic. I get extremely nervous doing presentations and even though it will be in second life where people can only see my avatar I’m still feeling nervous! It is a strange situation though, being in a game with your classmates, all in different locations and having to deliver a presentation about something your interested in through an online avatar! It’s defiantly a new one for me.
John divided the class into five groups of six people. Three out of the 5 other people in my group (the mauve group), are in my class irl so I know most of my group outside Second Life although John does not want up discussing any group work offline. We need to figure out ways to communicate online and get to know each other. During the week Asessi posted in our Facebook group and asked all Mauve group members to comment on her post so we could create a group chat to assist us in our project. I wasn’t added to any group chat after this so I don’t know if it was create or if it was I don’t believe I was added to it.
In class John went through a presentation about group work, roles in a group and the stages of working as part of a group. We discussed whether or not people like working in groups and I think most people were saying that it depended on what the project was which I would agree with. We talked about how having different individuals in a group can make a very strong team because everyone comes from different backgrounds and has different skills.
Our group did not meet this week. I think we didn’t try to make contact with each other in time. I don’t think a group chat was created but I believe once we have a place where our group can communicate easily we can find a time that suits us all to meet in Second Life outside of class time.
